Dry Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1.75 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.5 cup cocoa powder
  • 0.67 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.67 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup coffee (hot)
  • 11.11 oz butter (unsalted)
  • 14.1 oz dark chocolate (about 60%-70%)
  • 0.33 cup cocoa powder
  • 1.33 cups heavy cream
  • 1.33 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions 

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and prep two 8-inch baking pans with parchment paper.
  • Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, then add wet ingredients and mix until smooth.
  • Divide batter into pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool the cakes completely before frosting.
  • Make frosting by melting butter, cream, and chocolate, then cool and frost the cake.
  • Assemble the cake with frosting between layers and on top, creating a wave pattern.

For best results, let the cake cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
