A comforting and flavorful sweet potato casserole perfect for holiday gatherings or cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Sweet Potatoes

  • 2.5 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4 medium)

Butter

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (cut into cubes)

Sweetener

  • 0.25 cup honey (or maple syrup or brown sugar)

Spices and Flavorings

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Milk and Egg

  • 0.33 cup warmed milk (whole milk is best)
  • 1 large egg

Topping

  • 0.75 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 425°F. Scrub sweet potatoes, poke holes, and bake for 50-65 minutes until soft. Cool slightly.
  • Reduce oven to 350°F. Scoop out flesh, mash with butter, then mix in honey, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, vanilla, milk, and egg.
  • Transfer mixture to an 8x8-inch dish. Mix pecans, brown sugar, and cinnamon for topping, sprinkle over casserole.
  • Cover with foil, bake for 20 minutes, then uncover and bake 20-25 minutes until lightly browned and center reaches 160°F. Rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, toast the pecans before adding to the topping.
