A simple and rustic French-inspired dessert featuring flaky crust and tender, spiced apples. Perfect for showcasing fresh apples with minimal fuss.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
  • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 1/4 cup ice-cold water (plus more as needed)

Egg wash

  • 1 large egg (beaten with milk)
  • 15 ml milk

Filling

  • 3–4 apples peeled and sliced apples (about 4–5 cups (500–600g))
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (packed light or dark)
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Optional toppings

  • to taste coarse sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons salted caramel sauce (drizzled over filling)

Instructions 

  • Mix flour, sugar, and salt; cut in butter until crumbly. Add water, form dough, chill for 1 hour.
  • Combine apples, sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg; set aside.
  • Roll dough into a 12-inch circle on floured surface; transfer to baking sheet.
  • Arrange apple filling in center, fold edges over, brush with egg wash, sprinkle with coarse sugar, and drizzle caramel if desired. Chill for 15 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C). Bake for 35–36 minutes until golden and bubbly. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Chill the assembled galette well to maintain shape during baking.
