A rich and moist chocolate cake perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • ¾ cup cocoa powder (dutch processed)
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¾ tsp kosher salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup buttermilk ((room temperature))
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup very hot water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter ((room temperature))
  • ½ cup sour cream ((room temperature))
  • 6 oz dark chocolate ((chopped))

Frosting Ingredients

  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 cup cocoa powder ((dutch processed))

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C and prepare cake pans.
  • Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Whisk wet ingredients in a jug.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients, then add hot water.
  • Pour batter into pans and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  • Cool cakes before frosting.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients.
