No-Yeast Irish Soda Bread

This traditional Irish soda bread is quick to make and perfect for a hearty, crusty loaf without yeast.

Ingredients

Dry ingredients

  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Wet ingredients

  • 1.75 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease or line a baking sheet.
  • Mix flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
  • Add buttermilk and melted butter; stir until just combined.
  • Shape dough into a round loaf, place on prepared sheet, and cut a deep X on top.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool slightly before slicing. Best enjoyed warm or toasted.

Notes

For a softer crust, cover with foil during the first 20 minutes of baking.
