A delicious make-ahead breakfast bake infused with warm spices, perfect for holiday mornings or special brunches.

Ingredients

Bread

  • 1 long loaf French bread (sliced about 3/4-inch thick, about 24 slices)
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter (melted (half of 1 stick))
  • 3 large eggs
  • 0.5 cup milk (optionally use 3/4 cup if bread is old or hard)
  • 0.25 cup maple syrup
  • 0.25 cup light molasses (not blackstrap)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 0.5 to 1 ground nutmeg (to taste)
  • 0.5 to 1 ground cloves (to taste)
  • pinch optional salt (optional and to taste)
  • optional confectioners’ sugar (for dusting)
  • for serving Ginger Molasses Maple Syrup or regular maple syrup

Instructions 

  • Line an 8x9-inch pan with foil, spray with cooking spray, and arrange bread slices in 3 overlapping rows.
  • Melt butter, then whisk in eggs, milk, maple syrup, molasses, and spices.
  • Pour mixture over bread, cover, and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.
  • Before baking, re-distribute any pooled liquid, then bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-35 minutes until set.
  • Optional: dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve with syrup or toppings.

Notes

Ensure bread is slightly stale for best absorption, and adjust spices to taste.
