A delicious homemade bread combining whole wheat and bread flour, sweetened with honey, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Dairy and Yeast

  • 2 cups warm milk (about 110-115°F)
  • 1-1/2 Tbsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water

Flours

  • 2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3 to 3-1/2 cups bread flour or all purpose flour (start with 3 and add more as needed)
  • 3 Tbsp shortening (butter flavored preferred)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 Tbsp salt

Egg wash

  • 1 egg whisked egg (with 1 Tbsp water)

Instructions 

  • Mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar; let sit 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add water, flours, shortening, honey, and salt; knead on low for 2 minutes.
  • Let dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled.
  • Divide dough, shape, place in greased pans, and let rise 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F, brush loaves with egg wash, and bake 30 minutes.
  • Cool for 30 minutes before slicing. Optional: brush with melted butter for softer crust.

Notes

Ensure the dough is tacky but not sticky for best results.
